An Olympian Comes to Ascot!

On Friday the 24th of October, we were treated to a visit
from a very special guest! Storm Uru, Olympic Rower, came
to speak to us at our assembly. Storm is a local boy and
he told us all about what it was like to compete in the Beijing
Olympics earlier this year. We loved hearing about the
Olympic Village - especially the food court which was the size
of eight football fields, and everything was free! If
that's not motivation to get out and train, then we don't know
what is!!! Storm told us to aim high and that we can
achieve whatever we want to if we believe in ourselves and set
goals. He would know!! As well as being a champion rower,
Storm has already graduated Bachelor of Science, in Chemistry
and also Bachelor of Business Studies, in Finance - and he's
only 23! For more information on this amazing young man,
visit www.stormuru.com.
It was really awesome to have Storm come and visit,
especially because so many of us watched him on TV as he
competed in the mens lightweight double sculls. Thanks for
coming, Storm! You are a true role model and we look
forward to watching you compete in the London Olympics in 2012.

Some of our senior students
show Storm some tricks for his next big photo op.
The Minister of Education
Meets Pat the Poacher!
On Wednesday the 24th of September, the Minister of
Education, Mr. Chris Carter, came to Ascot School. We were
very honoured to have a visit from such an important guest, and
got the chance to show Mr. Carter Room 4's book 'Pat the
Poacher' (a story about seafood poaching) which recently
received special recognition from the Ministry of Fisheries.
Matu Taylor-Templeton and Shreya Bir, who jointly illustrated
the book, and Patrick Turnhout (or Pat!) showed Mr. Carter their
handiwork.

Book Week 2008 was a spectacular affair! This year's
theme was "Book Bash", so Miss Horrell and her class decorated
the library to look like a great big party. The rest of
the classes helped by making special art work for the occasion.
On Thursday we all got dressed up like book characters and had a
parade! The children of Ascot would like to thank the Altrusa
Society, who came in and read to us during lunchtimes, Bertie
Budgie and Bruce C Gull for coming to our parade, all the
friends and family members who came to see us in our costumes,
and most of all, Mrs Blackler and Miss Horrell who did such a
fantastic job of organising the event. We're already
looking forward to Book Week 2009!

On Thursday the 7th of August, Room 13 were lucky enough to
have a visit from a special guest. Dayle Cheatley from
Cycling Southland came to talk to us as part of our Food for
Energy Inquiry unit. He told us all about cycling and sports
nutrition, and gave us an insight into the diet and training of
an Olympic cyclist - his wife Catherine, who went to Beijing to
compete in the road and track cycling events!
Thanks for coming in Dayle!

making . . .?

On
the first Friday of Term 3, Darren Ludlow came to talk to us
in our assembly. Darren spoke about his career as a
radio host and how important it is to be a good reader and
writer. We learnt a lot about the life of a radio dj,
including the 4.30am wake up calls!!! Thanks Darren!

On Friday the 27th of June, Blair Stewart and Matt Holloway from
the Southland Stags came to talk to us. They told
us about what it's like to be a professional rugby player and we
had the opportunity to ask them questions about their training,
nutrition and aspirations! At the end of assembly Matt and
Blair signed some autographs and chatted to the students of
Ascot. Thanks for coming, Matt and Blair!!

On Wednesday the 18th of June, New Zealand
Children's Author John Parker visited Ascot School!

He is famous for writing books such as
Dragonspell, Sucked In, Second Thoughts, What a Wreck! and many
more. John writes for children of all ages but specialises
in fictional stories for young adults, in particular, boys.
John spoke to us about his career as an
author, why it is important to read and write as much as
possible and what makes a good story. We would like to
thank him very much for visiting!!!

The Ascot Community School Fair was a really great way to start
off the year. Classes made products to sell and the
community really got on board and helped to make it a day to
remember! Special attractions included jeep rides,
sponge-throwing, competitions, a chocolate wheel, pony rides, a
garage sale and lots more. We would like to especially
thank the parent support group for all their hard work.

Another great day was our School
Cross Country in Term Two. Take a look at the
pictures below!
